Christy's Auction, Indianapolis, Indiana

On the first day of July we spent the day at Christy's Auction in Indianapolis, Indiana. This large auction house has auctions every Wednesday, and is generally more of a liquidator than the usual places we attend. That is, much of their items appear to come from storage lockers or cleaning out property from foreclosed homes, with occasional estate-type purchases mixed in. This week they had a large selection of Muncie pottery that appeared to be the liquidation of a antique store booth as the pottery was labeled with prices. Mixed in were a few Burley Winter pieces (mislabeled as Muncie), some Brush pieces (once again, mislabeled), and a few McCoy Pottery pieces. We came home with just about everything, over 30 pieces in total.

Although the grey Archeture pieces command a premium, we were happy to bring home these two fine examples of McCoy Pottery Archeture planters from 1951 in the more common green drip over yellow glaze. Free of any discernible damage, they cleaned up nicely with just some soap and water.

We have found that these vintage McCoy Pottery planters in good shape are getting harder and harder to locate, although they were very plentiful just a few years ago. Both collectors and interior design specialists have been snapping them up so we expect prices for this line to increase as time goes on.

Don't forget to check The Kings Fortune for all of your vintage and antique pottery needs.

Cross Artifacts, Jeffersonville, Ohio

Saturday we drove out to Jeffersonville, Ohio, to an auction held by Cross Artifacts. It was just a little outside of the town, at a large metal building surrounded by farms. It was very easy to find, and there was plenty of parking for the crowd that arrived. The spacious interior had lots of seating, and it was fairly easy to get through the tables to inspect the goods. There was a second ring for coins and furniture, but they were able to control the speaker systems to make it easy for everyone. We were surprised to find that the crowd of around 70 people were happy to pay retail prices for many of the items for sale, but of course as resellers we were looking for the undervalued items. We came away with a few nice Cowan pieces, Van Briggle, and even a Moorcroft piece. There was not a lot of vintage McCoy pottery, but we ended up with a few pieces anyway.

We did grab a few clean 1961 Springwood pieces, a planter and a vase. Both in pink feature hand painted colors, we were happy to get them.

Although we did not end up filling our tubs to the brims, we were still satisfied with what we did get, and feel it was well worth the trip.

Cold Winter for McCoy

We went  to several auctions this week that had plenty of nice pottery, but not one single piece of vintage McCoy pottery. It was almost spooky. Lots of Rookwood and Roseville, and even a piece of Cowan which is almost impossible to find.

We did an online search of auctions for next week within 300 miles and still turned up almost nothing besides a chipped pitcher and a cracked McCoy vase. At least our online store has plenty, but unless the drought ends soon we will start to get depleted. Maybe it is all hiding and it will come out in the spring!

In the meantime, take a look at this classic clown bank we got a few months ago!

Introduction

Hello fellow McCoy Pottery fans!

My name is Renee and I can't seem to stay away from auctions when they have McCoy pottery for bid. I am creating this blog to chronicle my adventures (and misadventures!) running to auctions all over the northeast in search of vintage McCoy pottery.  I look forward to posting up lots of pictures, and letting you know where I find the deals. I will also try and post updates on upcoming auctions I find that may be interesting.

Much of the McCoy pottery I find will be up for sale at The Kings Fortune, so stop by and check us out!
